Sam Brown was born 3rd of eight children (7boys and 1 girl) (John, Robert, Abbie, Donald, Lane, William, & Dave) to Sgt. Austin and Hazel Brown in Ohio January 5, 1944. He grew up in Maryland, graduated from Brooklyn Park High School in 1961 and joined the Army in 1962. He received Christ as his Savior while stationed in Germany (on the Berlin Wall) at an Army Chapel Service.
Sam came home in 1965 and joined the Maryland State Police. He met Phyllis Owen in 1966 and they got married February 11, 1967. They have three children, Kathy, Minty, and Sam and 8 grandchildren (7 boys and 1 princess) Michael Hite III, Mathew Hite, Michael Cale, Steven Cale, Emily Hite, and Isaiah, Solomon, & Luke Brown.
Sam served 22 years with the Maryland State Police before retiring in 1988. He taught Drivers Ed and Traffic Safety in most AA County schools, and began a state wide officer friendly program. During this time re received numerous awards for outstanding service.
Sam attended Catonsville Community College and the University of Maryland, where he graduated with Honors. Sam also graduated from NOBI Bible College (National Outreach Bible Institute) and was ordained as a Pastor by the Evangelical Church Alliance. He served as a pastor on staff of Victory Bible Church for 10 years.
After retiring from the MSP he embarked on a new career going back to school to obtain certification to teach Special Ed. He retired from teaching full time in 2006.
Sam served 25 years in the US Army Reserves as an MP instructor and later as a Chaplin's Assistant.
His favorites were Gods Word, Prayer & people, his kids and grandkids. Sam liked to travel and had a real love of history, especially American military history. Favorite place to visit was Williamsburg, VA and surrounding area. He is a big baseball & football fan. Favorite team, Cleveland Indians & he called himself "A suffering" Cleveland Browns fan. He loved bowling and TELLING BAD JOKES!!!!
Sam served as an Elder in Heritage Community Church in Severn, MD for the past 20 years.
After a long illness on December 13, 2016 Sam died peacefully in his home, surrounded by family. Sam has lived in Pasadena for the past 50 years where he resided with his wife Phyllis.
Friends may call on Sunday from 3:00 to 5:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Stallings Funeral Home, P.A.
Funeral services will be held at Heritage Community Church on Monday at 12:30 PM. Interment Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Crownsville.
