  • It is with great sadness that the family of John Buchanan Richardson III announces his passing at 9:42 am on December 15th, 2017.  John, the loving husband of Pattie Richardson of 31 years, was a long-time resident of Gibson Island, Maryland.  John passed of natural causes with his family and friends close by.  John was born December 5th, 1942 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the son of Colonel John B. Richardson, Jr. and Jeanne Farley Richardson and older brother of Spencer Grady Richardson.  John graduated from the Seoul American High School in Seoul, South Korea in 1961 and the University of Maryland in 1966.  John’s Grandparents John B. Richardson, Sr. and Helen Grady Richardson were one of the earliest residents of Gibson Island, moving to the Island in 1927.  John spent his early summers on the Island with his grandmother.  John won the Symington Memorial for Water Sports in 1953 and was an avid sailor and tennis player during his youthful summers.  John’s parents retired at Gibson Island when John left for college in 1962.  Over the next 30 years, John frequented Gibson Island on visits to his parents, and his children would spend summers with their grandparents experiencing the joys of the Island, just as John did growing up.  John and his family moved to Gibson Island in 1993 to care for his parents. John and Pattie raised their children on the Island while playing active roles in the community, including John’s service as the Club Treasurer.  This year marks 90 years of club membership for the Richardson family, making John and his family the longest, continuous members of the Gibson Island Club.

John’s professional life included service to his country in the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) prior to continuing his education at Florida State University where he earned a Masters degree in Accounting, and opening a successful private practice for 20 years in Tallahassee, Florida as a Certified Public Accountant.  John transitioned his practice to Forensic Accounting, combining his investigative skills and technical expertise in accounting to become one of the Nation’s leading forensic accountants.  John pioneered a number of techniques and procedures that led to the successful prosecution of major fraud cases both nationally and internationally.  Despite his extraordinary professional accomplishments in the field of forensic accounting, he never hesitated to let everyone know his true legacy and greatest source of pride were his children and their accomplishments as students, successes in their chosen professions, and their contributions as good citizens. John will be deeply missed by his loving family and friends.  He is survived by his wife and best friend, Patricia Ann Richardson, son Brigadier General John Buchanan Richardson IV, daughters Dr. Laurel Ann Ballard, Dr. Patricia Jeanne Herford, Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Williams, and Mrs. Allyson Joy Dlugokeski and 6 grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Stallings Funeral Home, 3111 Mountain Road, Pasadena, MD 21122 on Thursday December 28th, 2017 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. A memorial service will be held at Our Lady Of The Chesapeake Catholic Church, 8325 Ventnor Road, Pasadena, MD 21122 on Friday, December 29th, 2017 at 10:00am.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in the name of John Buchanan Richardson III to the Gary Sinise Foundation at
