  • Polly Batchelder, 96, of Mt. Vernon, Md., retired editor, Washington, DC, native, and the widow of an American University professor, died April 23 in Takoma Park after a brief illness. Born Neva Pauline Manning, the youngest child of William and Mabel Manning, she attended DC Public Schools and graduated from American University in 1943. Her career at the State Department in Washington and Johns Hopkins Press in Baltimore led eventually to freelance work as an editor and book designer. She wed Merritt C. Batchelder in 1964 and they moved to the Eastern Shore in 1972.

In retirement, her hobbies included gardening, art, ornithology, and genealogy. She was a devoted volunteer who shared her time and talents unstintingly with organizations including the Lower Delmarva Genealogical Society, Maryland Ornithological Society, Somerset County Historical Society, and the Nabb Research Center at Salisbury University. Survivors include her son, Geoffrey Batchelder of Takoma Park, niece Joan Alster of Shaker Heights, Ohio, and nephew Steve Manning of Beebe, Arkansas. Burial in Asbury Churchyard, Mt. Vernon Rd. Princess Anne, MD, at noon on Thursday, August 23. In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial contribution to one of the above organizations.
