  • Alma "Shirley" Murphy, 77, a resident of Dover, DE, passed away Thursday, October 4, 2018 at State Street Assisted Living in her apartment with family.

Shirley was the 2nd of 4 children, born to the Late Joseph and Goldie Kirkpatrick on February 13, 1941 in Ashland, KY. Her family moved east and she grew up in and around Anne Arundel County, MD where she attended Southern High School and also married and raised two girls with her late husband of 57 years, Francis J. Murphy, Jr. in 1958.  During her working years she carried many roles.  She was a Realtor for Chris Coile and Associates from 1970-1981, a Sales Manager for La Fontaine Bleau from 1981-1986, and a Marketing Director for Allstate Alarm Systems Corporation in Glen Burnie from 1986-1994. In 1994, she returned to the La Fontaine Bleu as a Public Relations Director. Throughout, she remained a strong political figure and devoted supporter of the Democratic Party, giving all families a voice when it mattered most.  Mrs. Murphy was involved in many organizations including Commissioner for the Anne Arundel County Housing Authority, Charter Member of the Greater Pasadena Council, Board Member of the Northern Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce, North Arundel Hospital Foundation Committee, Anne Arundel County Trade Council, BWI Business Partnership, Charter Member of Harbor Hospital Steering Committee, a part of the Pasadena Business Association, a Charter Member of the Linthicum Rotary, and an active Rotarian of the Glen Burnie Association. All these led to her running for office in 1998 where she was elected the first woman to the County Council in the 3rd district in Anne Arundel County and served as their Chairman in 2001. Soon after, she retired her political career but remained active in her community and was involved with many charities. Alongside her late husband, the things that made them most proud were their children and watching their families grow. She wanted not only to be remembered for her devotion to the community, but to her family as well. Later in life, Shirley enjoyed taking a backseat on Fran’s motorcycle, traveling, spending time with their line dancing family at the La Fontaine Bleu, having lunch dates with friends, and spending time with family.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Murphy is preceded in death by her husband Francis J. Murphy, Jr., daughters Robin Wallace Murphy, Dina R. Wingate, brother Kenneth Kirkpatrick, and sister Patricia Curtis. She is survived by her sister Jackie Bready, grandchildren Thomas Wingate, David Wingate, Erin Jones, Jenna Reece, Lane Wallace and great grandchildren Brynlee Jones, Kieran Reece, and Emma Wingate, along with cousins, nieces and nephews.
